How to configure embedded software after a server migration or an IP/Hostname change
“Help! We’re in the process of migrating our PaperCut server to a new server, or changing it’s IP address. What do we need to configure on our PaperCut-embedded copiers so that they keep communicating to the server?”’
This article pertains exclusively to PaperCut MF, the edition of PaperCut that implements copier control.
Maybe your organization has decided to change the IP address or hostname of your PaperCut server (possibly as part of a PaperCut Server Migration). If the IP address or hostname of your PaperCut server changes, then how do copiers running the PaperCut embedded application know how to contact the PaperCut server? You may need to make the changes for each brand of device as described below.
Before undertaking these changes we recommend you contact your PaperCut Partner for consultation and technical assistance (their details can be found on the About page in the admin interface of your PaperCut server).
Brother, via BSI
- Using a web browser, go to the URL of the Brother device’s web admin page. E.g. http://<device-ip> and login to the Brother device as “admin”
- Click on “Administration Settings” or “Administrator” at the top of the page
- Under Solutions Application Entry, ensure the Login and Logout URL both read: http://papercut.server.IP.address:9191/device/brother?name=device_name
- Submit changes and restart device
For example, if your PaperCut‘s server IP address was “192.168.1.57”,and you gave the MFD the name “BrotherMFD” the URL would read: http://192.168.1.57:9191/device/brother?name=BrotherMFD
NOTE: The [device name] in the URL above will be the Device name that is used in the PaperCut administration interface on your server
Canon (MEAP)
- Using a web browser go to the URL of the Canon device’s web admin page. E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Enter the System Manager ID and System PIN to enter admin mode
- Click the ‘Configure PaperCut’ option
- Enter the PaperCut server’s new hostname or IP address under “Server Hostname”
- Submit changes and restart device
Dell (eSF)
- Using a web browser go to the URL of the Dell device’s web admin page. E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Look for an option called “Embedded Solutions” or “Device Solutions”
- Click the “PaperCut” entry
- Click on the “Configure” button that appears
- Enter the PaperCut server’s new hostname or IP address under “Server Hostname”
- Submit changes and restart device
HP OXP
- The initial setup of HP OXP devices may involve manually defining the Application Server’s IP address / hostname via the system.network-address global configuration key. Check this config key via the Advanced Config Editor, and if the value is not blank, change it to reflect the new IP address or FQDN of the Application Server before then changing the server address on the HP device. For more information please see Section 5.1.1 Inbound connections to PaperCut MF Application Server of the PaperCut MF HP OXP Embedded Manual.
- If the system.network-address config key is blank, then HP OXP devices server address will automatically be adjusted when the PaperCut MF server next reconfigures the device, which will happen periodically automatically. One way to force this update is to restart the PaperCut Application Server service.
- If an HP OXP device has been configured to utilise HTTPS / SSL when communicating with the Application Server, the SSL certificate may need to be regenerated to accommodate the change in server network address. For more information please see Section 5.2.1 HTTPS Security (recommended) of the PaperCut MF HP OXP Embedded Manual.
HP FutureSmart
- Using a web browser go to the URL of the HP device’s web admin page. E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Click Sign In in the top-right corner of the page and log in using the device Administrator credentials
- Select the PaperCut Server Configuration menu on the General tab in the device’s web admin page
- Enter the PaperCut server’s new hostname or IP address under “Server Hostname”
- Submit changes and restart device
HP, via Chai SOE DSE
- Using a web browser, go to the PaperCut embedded configuration page, E.g. http://<device-ip>/hp/device/papercut.home
- Edit the Server IP / Hostname field
- Click Apply Changes and restart device
HP OSA / S900 Series
- Browse to the URL of the HP device’s web admin page. E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Navigate to ‘Application Settings → External Applications Settings → External Accounting Application Settings’
- Edit the Address for Application UI with the new IP/hostname
- Edit the Address for Web Service field with the new IP/hostname
- Press “Submit”
- Press “Reboot Now”
Konica Minolta, via OpenAPI
The server address on Konica Devices will automatically be adjusted when the PaperCut MF server next reconfigures the device, which will happen periodically automatically.
One way to force an update is to restart the PaperCut Application Server service.
NOTE: If you have manually set the server’s IP address / hostname by using the Advanced Config key: “system.network-address” then you would need to change this first, before PaperCut can reconfigure the Device. For more information please see the Konica Minolta embedded manual.
Kyocera, via Kyocera Hybrid Platform for Advanced Solutions (HyPAS)
- At the MFD press the Admin Login button and enter the Administrator credentials
- Once logged in edit the PaperCut server IP address
- Click on “Apply” and reboot the MFD to make the changes take effect
Lexmark, via Lexmark Embedded Solutions Framework (LeSF)
- Browse to the URL of the Lexmark device’s web admin page. E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Look for an option called “Embedded Solutions” or “Device Solutions”
- Click the “PaperCut” entry
- Click on the “Configure” button that appears
- Enter the PaperCut server’s new hostname or IP address under “Server Hostname”
- Submit changes and restart device
Ricoh, via Ricoh Embedded Software Architecture (ESA)
For SDK/J application v21505 or later:
- Access the Admin Screen press the small “Admin” text in the lower right corner of the login screens
- Enter the MFD’s Administrator username and password to access the settings
- Update the IP address
- Press Save to change the settings and restart the application
NOTE: If you are also changing the name of the device please take care to also ‘rename’ the device in the PaperCut administration interface.
For SDK/J application versions prior to v21505:
Reinstall the embedded application using the new folder created when PaperCut was installed. Then follow the instructions in the Ricoh embedded manual
NOTE: If you keep the same device name the new device will have the job history of the old device.
For SmartSDK:
To make any changes to Ricoh SmartSDK device, you are required to log in as administrator first as shown in the steps below, then you’ll have the ability to change the PaperCut connection settings.
- On the device, select “User Tools” from the home screen
- Select “Machine Features”, “Login” and then enter the machine administrator login credentials. Press “Exit” then select “home” to go back into PaperCut application.
- Go back to the PaperCut application and press the “Admin” text in the lower-right corner of the connecting or login screens
- Update the fully qualified hostname
- Press Save changes to change the settings and reconnect. Remember to log out once the application is reconnected
NOTE: The hostname must be fully qualified, without the complete domain name the application will not be able to connect to the Server.
OKI, via Open Platform
OKI Open Platform devices require two steps to reconfigure for a new IP.
A) Configure OKI Embedded Web Browser (EWB):
- Browse to the URL of the OKI device’s web admin page (TopAccess). E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Log in as the “Admin” user
- Select the “Administration” tab
- Navigate to the “Administration” → “EWB” page.
- Under the “Home Page Setting” set the “Home Page” by changing “server-address” for the new address of the PaperCut server. E.g. http://server.ip:9191/device/oki/ Alternatively to use an encrypted HTTPS connection (advisable when using card association) enter https://server.ip:9192/device/oki/
- Press the “Save” button and restart the device
B) Configure MFP LDAP server
An OKI connects to the PaperCut using LDAP to authenticate users and validate card authentication. The MFP must be configured to establish an LDAP connection to the PaperCut server. To do this:
- Log in to the device’s web administration (TopAccess) with a web browser E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Select the “Administration” tab and login as an admin user
- Select the “Maintenance” subsection, and the “Directory Service” option
- Select the Directory service currently setup for PaperCut
- Edit the Server IP address with the new servers details
- Press ok to save
Samsung, via Samsung eXtensible Open Architecture (XOA)
- Using a web browser login to the Samsung web interface, Samsung SyncThru, as administrator
- On the top menu bar hover over “XOA”and select the sub item called “PaperCut”
- Edit the hostname or IP address of the PaperCut server
- Apply changes and reboot MFD
Sharp, via Sharp Open Systems Architecture (OSA)
- Browse to the URL of the Sharp device’s web admin page. E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Navigate to ‘Application Settings → External Applications Settings → External Accounting Application Settings’
- Edit the Address for Application UI with the new IP/hostname
- Edit the Address for Web Service field with the new IP/hostname
- Press “Submit”
- Press “Reboot Now”
NOTE: If you’re using Integrated Scanning, you’ll also need to update the “PaperCut Scanning”, “PaperCut Home” and “Print Release” which is also under ‘Application Settings → External Applications Settings → External Accounting Application Settings’. See the Sharp embedded manual, section 3.5 for more information.
NOTE: If you have manually set the server’s IP address / hostname by using the Advanced Config key: “system.network-address” then you would need to change this first, before PaperCut can reconfigure the Device. For more information, check the Sharp embedded manual.
Toshiba, via e-BRIDGE Open Platform
Toshiba devices require two steps to reconfigure for a new server IP.
A) Configure Embedded Web Browser (EWB):
- Browse to the URL of the Toshiba device’s web admin page (TopAccess). E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Log in as the “Admin” user
- Select the “Administration” tab
- Navigate to the “Administration” → “EWB” page
- Under the “Home Page Setting” set the “Home Page” by changing “server-address” for the new address of the PaperCut server E.g. http://server.ip:9191/device/toshiba/ Alternatively to use an encrypted HTTPS connection (advisable when using card association)enter https://server.ip:9192/device/toshiba/
- Press the “Save” button
B) Configure MFP LDAP server
A Toshiba connects to the PaperCut using LDAP to authenticate users and validate card authentication. The MFP must be configured to establish an LDAP connection to the PaperCut server. To do this:
- Log in to the device’s web administration (TopAccess) with a web browser E.g. http://<device-ip>
- Select the “Administration” tab and login as an admin user
- Select the “Maintenance” subsection, and the “Directory Service” option
- Select the Directory service currently setup for PaperCut.
- Edit the Server IP address with the server’s new details.
- Press ok to save, and reboot the device
NOTE: For older SDKv1 devices you also need to change the SNMP trap location.
Xerox, via Xerox Secure Access and Xerox Network Accounting
The server address on Xerox devices will automatically be adjusted when the PaperCut MF server next reconfigures the device, which will happen periodically automatically.
One way to force an update is to restart the PaperCut Application service.
